California law allows detached ADUs up to 1,200 sq ft on most lots, and JADUs up to 500 sq ft within existing space. Local setback rules apply.
As of January 2025, California has removed owner-occupancy requirements for ADUs. You can rent both the main home and the ADU simultaneously.
