Your rights as a California homeowner
- This is an estimate, not a bid. The range above is generated from regional cost data. It is not an offer, a bid or a contract, and nothing on this page binds either side. A real price comes from a site visit and arrives in writing.
- A home improvement contract must be in writing. In California any home improvement job over $500 has to be a written contract, signed before work starts, listing the scope, the price and the payment schedule (B&P Code §7159).
- Your deposit is capped by law. A contractor may not take a down payment larger than $1,000 or 10% of the contract price — whichever is smaller — and progress payments may never run ahead of the work completed (B&P Code §7159.5).
- You have three business days to cancel. You may cancel a signed home improvement contract within three business days, and within five business days if you are 65 or older. The written cancellation notice comes with the contract.
- Check the licence before you hire — anyone. Every California contractor working on a job over $500 must be licensed. Verify us, and anyone else bidding, at cslb.ca.gov or on 800-321-CSLB (2752).
