Concrete Materials: What We Specify and Why

Concrete Materials: What We Specify and Why

Concrete is a mixture of Portland cement, aggregate, and water — but the proportions, additives, and delivery conditions make all the difference.

4,000 PSI ready-mix concrete
Used for: Driveways and structural slabs

Minimum for vehicle traffic. Higher PSI provides freeze-thaw resistance and longer service life.

3,000 PSI ready-mix concrete
Used for: Patios and walkways

Adequate for foot traffic. Lower cement content reduces cost on non-structural flatwork.

Fiber mesh reinforcement
Used for: Crack resistance additive

Polypropylene fibers distributed throughout the mix reduce plastic shrinkage cracking during the cure phase.

#4 rebar (epoxy-coated, 12" OC)
Used for: Driveways and structural slabs

Provides tensile strength that concrete alone lacks. Epoxy coating prevents corrosion in coastal Bay Area conditions.

We explain every material choice in our proposals. You know what's going into your home and why before any work starts.
