Quartz, Granite or Quartzite? Choosing Kitchen Countertops

October 20, 2026 · IronNest Construction · 3 min read

Countertops are the most-touched surface in a kitchen and one of its larger costs. Quartz, granite and quartzite are the three materials most homeowners compare, and the names cause a lot of confusion.

Quartz (Engineered Stone)

  • Made from crushed stone bound with resin, so colour and pattern are consistent
  • Non-porous: no sealing needed and very stain resistant
  • Can be damaged by very hot pans — use trivets
  • Wide range of prices and styles; a common best value

Granite

  • Natural stone; every slab is different
  • Handles heat well
  • Needs sealing periodically to resist stains
  • Price varies widely by stone and origin

Quartzite

  • Natural stone that is harder than granite and often looks like marble
  • Very durable and heat resistant
  • Usually more expensive, and needs sealing
  • Check that a “quartzite” is the real thing — some softer stones are sold under the name

Which One for You?

  • Busy family kitchen, low maintenance: quartz
  • Serious cooks who set hot pans down: granite or quartzite
  • Marble look without marble’s softness: quartzite or a marble-pattern quartz
  • Rental or tight budget: quartz in a stock colour, or quality laminate

Cost Factors

Edge profile, the number of cutouts (sink, cooktop), seams, and whether a full-height backsplash is the same material all affect the price as much as the stone itself. Templating happens after the cabinets are installed, so countertops are usually one of the later steps in a kitchen remodel.

Edges, Seams and Backsplashes

The edge profile changes both the look and the price. A simple eased or square edge is clean and modern; bevelled, bullnose and ogee edges add cost. Seams are unavoidable on long runs and L-shapes — ask where they will fall and how they will be colour-matched. Many homeowners run the countertop material up the wall behind the range as a full-height backsplash, which looks seamless and is easy to clean.

Caring for Your Countertop

  • Quartz: mild soap and water; avoid harsh chemicals and very hot pans
  • Granite and quartzite: wipe spills promptly and reseal on the schedule your fabricator recommends
  • All stone: use cutting boards, and do not stand on the counters

A simple water test tells you when stone needs resealing: if a few drops darken the stone within a few minutes, it is time.

Common Questions

Which countertop is easiest to maintain?

Quartz. It does not need sealing and resists stains well. Wipe it with mild soap and water and avoid putting very hot pans directly on it.

Is marble a good kitchen countertop?

Marble is beautiful but softer and more porous, so it etches and stains more easily. Many people who want the look choose quartzite or a marble-pattern quartz instead.

Can countertops be installed over old ones?

Generally no for stone. The old tops are removed so the new ones sit level on the cabinets and the edges and backsplash fit properly.
